Vintage Softie Dress with Aprons Project
I recently created a Prims Softie Doll Project for The Studio and have been itching to try another one! Ruth Rae’s book Layered Tattered and Stitched is such an inspiration, and I love the look of primitive, artistic sewing. This time, I did a quick sketch and created my own mini dress and apron templates which you can download for FREE (scroll down to see the download).
Start by cutting out the templates, and trace them onto your fabric. Use muslin for the dress (two pieces - front and back) and blue ticking fabric for the aprons. On the dress, stamp the script design on the upper left sleeve using brown StazOn Ink and the script design from the Spring Jubilee stamp set.
Stitch around dress twice, using brown thread, but leave the bottom edge open so that you can fill it. Stuff the dress with polyfil or fabric scraps and then sew the bottom shut.
Using the piece of blue ticking fabric that was cut out for the apron, stitch around the outside of it twice with brown thread, and sew small strips of muslin onto either side to use as the ties.
For this project, I also included an alternative “ruffled” apron idea (which does not require a template). Just take a longer strip of the blue ticking fabric, and gather it slightly as you sew across the top edge. Sew a long, thin piece of muslin over the top edge, leaving enough on either side to use as the apron ties.
Add some simple, small buttons to the dress. Using small black hangers and mini clothespins hang the dress onto the hanger. Display your mini Prims Softie anywhere inspiring - I think this one will be going in the kitchen!
