Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies Project

No reviews yet

Perfect for school teachers, neighbors, friends and family, these “ready to bake” recipe-in-a-jar gifts are inexpensive and easy to create!

Using one of her favorite cookie recipes, Shoppe Manager Vanessa Spencer fills a large glass jar with the layered ingredients (see below) and then tops each jar off with a Cosmo Cricket Show Topper.

"I love the ornate look of the white knob but I also love the clip lid because you can add ephemera as an interesting accent," says Vanessa.

Once you have filled each jar, simply write the cooking instructions onto a grubby tag (see below) and tie the tag to the knob or insert into the clip. To assemble three jars like Vanessa, you will need to make three batches of the recipe below. The recipe measures out to fill one quart size Mason jar. The Mason jar must be a wide mouth jar to fit the Cosmo Cricket Show Toppers.

Please note – The Cosmo Cricket Show Toppers are not ideal for proper canning, therefore should not be used for long term food storage.

Supplies:
Mason Jar 800ml of 1 quart size – wide mouth.
Measuring cup and spoons
Paper Towel

Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup white granulated sugar
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions:
Make sure the jars are clean and 100% dry. Each layer is listed below. Between each layer use a hard object (I used the bottom of a spice jar) to firmly press the layer so it isn’t loose. After you do that you may need to gently use a paper towel to wipe off excess flour etc so that the glass is clear for the next layer.

First layer:
Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together.
Second layer:
Oats.
Third Layer:
Brown sugar and cinnamon.
Fourth layer:
White sugar.
Fifth Layer:
Raisins.
Sixth layer:
Walnuts.

Directions to write on the grubby tag and attach to the jar:
Preheat oven to 350° F. Mix together 1/2 cup softened butter, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 tablespoon milk. Add Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookie Jar contents and mix well. Drop tablespoon sized rounds of mix onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake for approximately 10 minutes or until golden brown.
