DIY Forgotten Garden Specimen Board Project
It was love at first sight when it came to the Forgotten Garden Cling Mount Stamp Set. They reminded me so much of all the dried flowers and greenery I use in my projects, and I knew I needed them. My first inclination was to stamp them on shipping tags to use them as gift tags, but as soon as I stamped the first flower, a new idea formed. Seeing the flower on the tag reminded me of a specimen board, and I immediately knew I wanted to make my own version of one.
Another product I’ve been wanting to play with is the set of Worn Wallpaper Scraps, and I thought they’d pair nicely with the stamps. To begin, I tore the Worn Wallpaper Scraps into smaller pieces, and adhered them to a canvas using gel medium. When the gel medium dried, I applied washes of white and crème acrylic paint the canvas. I then applied white paint through a stencil to give everything a bit more texture. I still felt like the canvas needed a little something extra, so I quickly scribbled on it with a pink oil pastel as well as a charcoal stick. I stamped two more images onto stamps and colored all of the images in with watercolors. The tags were two white for my liking, so I submerged them in a coffee bath for about 20 minutes, and then sprinkled coffee grounds onto the tags. Once dry, I brushed the grounds off the tags to reveal a mottled effect I really enjoyed. To finish, I used wooden pushpins to attach the tags to the canvas. With so many fun designs in the Forgotten Garden Cling Mount Stamp set, I’m eager to make another specimen board on an even larger scale.
