Stationer€™s Desk Altered Vintage Cigar Box Project

No reviews yet

Vintage cigar boxes are a great surface for mixed-media art because once you’ve finished decorating them, you can use them as small storage containers. You can add paint, patterned paper, stenciling, decorative tape … pretty much anything you can think of to customize your box! After trying your own, consider altering and filling more for great, personal gift ideas. Stash one with back-to-school supplies or create a mini college care kit for your daughter. Have a friend or family member who fancies tea? Fill a cigar box with aromatics, a diffuser, tea bags, shortbread cookies, and anything else that will heighten their afternoon tea ritual!

Stationer’s Desk Altered Vintage Cigar Box Project Instructions:

For this altered vintage cigar box, I was inspired by Prima Marketing’s Stationer’s Desk collection of papers. I wanted to create a box to hold stationery supplies like ribbon and small envelopes.

Start by painting the box black with some chalkboard paint.

Trace and cut out patterned paper to fit the top and sides of the box.

After adhering the paper to the box, lightly sand and apply ink to the edges to create a distressed look.

Next, cut a label from patterned paper, corner-punch it, and glue it to the box.

Use a small handheld drill to make a hole in the top of the box. Loop jute twine to create a handle, and add a small dab of glue underneath the lid to hold the twine in place.

Lastly, fill the box with stationer’s supplies. I included ribbon, small envelopes, bags, and some wooden spools.
