A Spooky Sneak Peek at A Somerset Halloween

Jul 28th 2025

For artists who love Halloween, there’s just something about putting a vintage spin on this magical holiday. From the iconic vintage costumes and pumpkins used by trick-or-treaters of eras past, to the stylized black-and-white photos of pinup-style witches, a bit of vintage flair really complements this spooky season! We’re thrilled to be launching our new magazine A Somerset Halloween, dedicated to all things handmade, from frighteningly artistic decor to creepily creative gatherings. Below is a little sneak peek at some of the vintage-inspired creations in the premier issue, which are sure to get your cauldron bubbling.

CHRIS RAISSIS⎟ A SOMERSET HALLOWEEN VOLUME 1

In the article “Gothic Graduates of the Salem Street Seminary,” Chris Raissis shares that she was inspired by a collection of flea market finds. “I love poking around in flea markets and tag sales, which is where I’m often inspired to make something new from something old […],” Chris shares. “Halloween, with its anything-goes atmosphere, is the holiday that motivates me as well, and the result of these two inspirations is a creation like this altered muffin tin, celebrating the gothic graduates of the Salem Street Seminary!” The bewitching tale behind her vintage-inspired assemblage will have you watching the night sky for approaching brooms.

RAJELYN VALENTIN⎟ A SOMERSET HALLOWEEN VOLUME 1

A trio of grungy, timeworn pumpkins await in the article “Three Jacks From the Patch” by Rajelyn Valentin. As Rajelyn shares, “My favorite time of year is slowly approaching. There is nothing better than the changing colors of fall, crisp air, pumpkin spice everything, sweater weather, and the creepy cuteness of Halloween. Thoughts of pumpkins, spiders, and webs came to mind. I soon had the urge to create these pumpkin jacks and witch’s hats.” These charming characters would make a welcome addition to any Halloween celebration!

PATTY THURLBY⎟ A SOMERSET HALLOWEEN VOLUME 1

Describing her simple yet spooky decor idea in her article “Sheet Music Bat Ornaments,” Patty Thurlby says, “A little batty, a little spooky, and totally perfect for Halloween — whether you’re crafting eerie decorations or planning a bat-themed bash, you’re embracing the festive chaos just right.” These cute yet slightly creepy ornaments are the perfect project for a quick creative session.
