Shoppe Manager Vanessa Spencer shares a simple trick to transform a blank journal cover into a personalized work of art, perfect to give as a gift or hold onto as a special keepsake.

To create your own artfully embellished journal cover, you'll need only several crafty essentials. If you want to achieve a pastel palette like Vanessa, you can embellish pieces of chipboard with muted hues of Ranger Ink Claudine Hellmuth acrylic paints. (For more color scheme options, browse our special hand-picked collections.)

Choose your favorite shaped chipboard piece, and paint it white. Once that layer dries, add a rough coat of yellow paint, leaving a highlight of white around the edges. When both those layers are fully dry, Vanessa uses Red Lead's Hodge Podge stamp design and dips it into blue acrylic paint to add a distinct accent on the chipboard.

For an edgy, layered effect, after the paint has dried, stamp handwritten musings with the Read Lead Journey design with black ink onto the chipboard. Without rhyme or reason, Vanessa freely adds strips of Graffiti washi tape to tie it all together.

Once you're satisfied with your embellished piece, paint the cover of a kraft journal with white paint, and then attach the chipboard adornment to the journal cover with a strong liquid adhesive. And voilà! Your altered journal is ready to be opened as a blank canvas to record bright ideas, or packaged with pretty ribbon to gift to a friend.
