Sleeping Beauty Fairytale Journal Project by Sarah Donawerth
When creating a journal to sketch in, I was inspired by Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty” to create a picturesque storybook-themed journal that captured the aesthetic of the movie. I blended both colors of Aurora’s gown onto the cover to create an almost purple color and a texture that resembles the clouds that she waltzes on at the end of the movie. With bright pops of color and metal stamped details, this journal is a place to record my story, from “Once Upon a Time” to “Happily Ever After.”
Sleeping Beauty Fairytale Journal Project Directions:
Open the journal and place face down on the table so that you can paint both the front and back covers together.
With Dina Wakley paints and a makeup sponge, apply both the turquoise and magenta paints to the cover of the journal, blending well to create almost a purple color. Set aside to dry.
Stamp “Once Upon a Time” onto a scrap piece of leather with a hammer and metal stamping letters. Metal stamping letters are sharper than leather stamping letters, so each stamped image will create a cut in the leather, rather than an impression.
With a strip of lace, sponge the magenta paint onto the lace. Tip: Paint the lace over a scrap piece of paper, then remove and put on a different surface to dry so that the paint doesn’t stick in between the holes of the lace.
Layer book text behind the strip of lace and glue it along the spine on the front cover of the journal. Overlap your scrap of leather and glue down with a strong adhesive.
For the bookmark, metal stamp your initials into the bezel. Tip: You don’t need a lot of force to create a clean stamp on this bezel. Outline the letters with permanent marker, then wipe off surface with rubbing alcohol, leaving behind ink in the groove of the letter. Put a few colorful beads on an eyepin and close with a loop at the top, then attach your bezel and some charms to one end. Tie a length of ribbon to the other end and glue down to the inside of the back cover of the journal.
