Scrap Happy Mosaic Shadowbox Project by Johanna Love
We break a lot of plates in our house. Sadly, it's always the plates I really like that crash first, so of course I collect these beautifully-patterned scraps. Given that I'm terrible at making traditional mosaics with grout and planned designs, I made this project for those of us who are better at randomly scrapping together bits of our hoarded treasure stash. This way my plates have found new life on display.
Scrap Happy Mosaic Shadowbox Project Instructions:
Outside, place your favorite broken plate or any patterned plate between two canvas cloths, and hammer gently to break into smaller pieces.
Randomly place the broken plate pieces in the large compartment of a shadowbox until you are happy with your pattern. You may want to put a dab of glue under each piece to hold it in exact place, or just wing it like I did and let them slide around a bit.
Cut small strips of seam binding ribbon and lay into the bottoms of the three small compartments, then gently place a focal tile in each.
Mix 2 Tbsp. of Ice Resin per manufacturer's instructions, and pour 1/3 of mixture into each small compartment.
Then, mix another 2 Tbsp. of Ice Resin and slowly pour over all tiles in the large compartment. You may want to mix a third batch of Ice Resin (2 Tbsp.) to further cover your tiles.
If any tiles or ribbons shifted while pouring resin, you have about 5 minutes where you can make adjustments to these pieces by pushing them around with your resin stirring stick (DO NOT use your fingers!). Use a paper towel to immediately wipe up any stray resin drips. Pop any resin bubbles with a pin, then set shadowbox aside on a completely flat, level surface for at least 72 hours to cure. Consider also placing a bug screen over it while curing to avoid any unfortunate last-minute additions.
Once cured, the shadowbox can be used flat as a small drink coaster or perfume bottle display, or can be put on your mantle as evidence of both your clumsiness and your thriftiness.
