Past, Present, Future Art Journal Page Project

What I love most about art journaling is that there are no mistakes. It’s the perfect place to try out a new technique, play with colors, or simply experiment with a new product. Most importantly, I just try to have fun and not overthink the process.

When I first saw Stencil Girl’s new collection of stencils by Seth Apter, there was one that really spoke to me — Past, Present, Future. I knew instantly that I wanted to use it to create an art journal page, while also experimenting with texture paste and acrylic paint.

Past, Present, Future Art Journal Page Instructions:

First, coat the surface of your journal page with black gesso, and let dry. Use a heat gun to speed up the drying process.

Add a light layer of Dina Wakley Media Heavy Body Acrylic Paint in Turquoise, Sky, and Lime. Use a brayer to create a little texture and to help spread the paint onto the page. Use your heat gun to speed up the drying process.

Continue adding layers of paint using your fingers until you are satisfied with your composition, and remember, it’s an art journal page, so have fun and don’t overthink the process. While the page is still wet, add a bit of white paint to help mute some of the colors and to add a bit of contrast.

Cut out strips of patterned paper and adhere to the page with gel medium. Once set, coat the entire page with gel medium, and let dry.

Randomly stamp circles using permanent black ink. Use paint and small lids, credit cards, wooden skewers, or any other found objects to add extra color and texture.

Mix texture paste and Night acrylic paint using a palette knife, then stencil on the words “past, present, future,” and the word “within” from Stencil Girl’s Past Present Future Stencil by Seth Apter.

Once your stenciled words are dry, add splatters of black paint.

Finally, journal away! Add an inspirational quote, write your favorite song lyrics, or pencil in a poem.

How do I get published?

Thanks for your interest in our magazines! We encourage you to visit our Calls & Challenges  page to see what our editors are looking for.

Ready to begin? Here is where you can find our Submission Guidelines.

How do I change my address?

Our subscriptions ship directly from our printer in Wisconsin. For this reason, we need to be notified of your change of address at least two months before the next issue comes out, or it will be sent to the address we had on file and provided to our printer at the time it was due.

How to Notify Us About Your Change of Address
  1. Email the following to customerservice@stampington.com:
  • The publication(s) you subscribe to
  • Your name and new address
  • Your old address

2. Call to inform us of your new mailing address:

  • Toll-Free: 1-877-782-6737 or International: 1-949-380-7318
Mail Forwarded by the Post Office

If you forward mail to your new address through the Post Office, it won't apply to periodicals/your magazine subscription unfortunately. Also, since mail forwarding only lasts for a short time-frame, we request that you still notify us of your address change to prevent any service interruption to your subscription.

Stampington & Company cannot be held responsible for replacing "lost" issues from your subscription, if we did not receive your change of address request at least two months prior to your next issue's release date.

What if one of my issues doesn't arrive?

Subscription issues should arrive within the first week of the month your publication is released. Please add up to two weeks for international delivery.

If your magazine has not arrived by the 20th of the month, please contact our customer service department, so we can check to make sure nothing is amiss with your subscription, and see if you're eligible for a replacement copy. International subscribers can receive a digital version of the magazine as a replacement if one attempt has already been made to deliver the print edition to you.

Stampington & Company cannot be held responsible for postal delays or circumstances outside of our control, but we will make every effort to make it right.
