Pass Me a Napkin, Please Project Inspiration

I’ve mentioned in the past that it can be overwhelming to be surrounded by such inspiring artwork every day. I want to try every technique and create in every style. Unfortunately, there just isn’t enough time to do this, especially when you take my need to create a finished piece into consideration.

It’s a habit I’ve been trying to break. It’s something I know a lot of artists struggle with — the need to complete something, and the need for it to be absolutely perfect — and it can be such a hindrance to the creative process. Thankfully, as Somerset Studio has shifted to put more focus on the process, I’ve felt more comfortable and even excited by the idea of artistic playtime.

When we received the submissions for this issue of Somerset Studio, I was taken aback by all the amazing things our artists were doing with such uniquely patterned napkins. Prior to this, when I thought of patterned paper napkins, I thought of those loud designs used for birthdays and other celebrations. I had no idea how many beautiful napkins were out there, just begging to be adding to my supply stash.

Is working with napkins as easy as these artists made it seem? That was the question I set out to answer when I grabbed a few different paper napkins, some gel medium, a foam brush, and the journal I keep on hand simply to experiment in. My goal was to see what happened when I used the paper napkins in different ways. On each page, I combined the top layer of a napkin (the printed part) with something else, including another napkin. For each one, I first laid down a layer of gel medium to adhere to base to the page, then I added another layer of gel medium before laying the napkin down, and to finish, I added a final layer of gel medium to seal everything.

I hope this will inspire you to artfully elevate the paper napkin! You can find the full article and more creative ways for incorporating paper napkins into your next creative piece inside the Autumn 2019 Issue of Somerset Studio.

How do I get published?

Thanks for your interest in our magazines! We encourage you to visit our Calls & Challenges  page to see what our editors are looking for.

Ready to begin? Here is where you can find our Submission Guidelines.

How do I change my address?

Our subscriptions ship directly from our printer in Wisconsin. For this reason, we need to be notified of your change of address at least two months before the next issue comes out, or it will be sent to the address we had on file and provided to our printer at the time it was due.

How to Notify Us About Your Change of Address
  1. Email the following to customerservice@stampington.com:
  • The publication(s) you subscribe to
  • Your name and new address
  • Your old address

2. Call to inform us of your new mailing address:

  • Toll-Free: 1-877-782-6737 or International: 1-949-380-7318
Mail Forwarded by the Post Office

If you forward mail to your new address through the Post Office, it won't apply to periodicals/your magazine subscription unfortunately. Also, since mail forwarding only lasts for a short time-frame, we request that you still notify us of your address change to prevent any service interruption to your subscription.

Stampington & Company cannot be held responsible for replacing "lost" issues from your subscription, if we did not receive your change of address request at least two months prior to your next issue's release date.

What if one of my issues doesn't arrive?

Subscription issues should arrive within the first week of the month your publication is released. Please add up to two weeks for international delivery.

If your magazine has not arrived by the 20th of the month, please contact our customer service department, so we can check to make sure nothing is amiss with your subscription, and see if you're eligible for a replacement copy. International subscribers can receive a digital version of the magazine as a replacement if one attempt has already been made to deliver the print edition to you.

Stampington & Company cannot be held responsible for postal delays or circumstances outside of our control, but we will make every effort to make it right.
