More Ways to Put Those Essential Oils to Use
Just about everyone I know has gotten swept up in the essential oil craze, and I can’t say that I blame them. Those who have played around with essential oils know that a little goes a long way, so my friends and I are always talking about different ways to use up our supply.
When I noticed these gorgeous blue glass reed diffuser bottles in The Shoppe at Somerset, I knew I wanted a set for my home. The color is absolutely stunning and I love finding ways to make my house smell extra fresh. I love candles and wax melts, but I’ve steered clear from reed diffusers in the past because they can be a little on the pricier side. Making my own fragrance oil for them severely cuts the cost down, as I already have everything I need to create them. A quick Internet search helped me figure out the basic formula for making my own fragrance oil.
Supplies
- 1/4 c. light oil (I used almond)
- 15–20 drops essential oil
- 2 Tbsp. rubbing alcohol/vodka
- Glass container w/ narrow mouth
- Glass measuring cup
- Reed sticks
Instructions
- Add 1/4 cup of light oil to a glass measuring cup.
- Add 2 Tbsp. of rubbing alcohol or vodka to the measuring cup. The alcohol thins out the oils and helps them travel up the reeds.
- Add 15–20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Use one of the reeds to stir the mixture and then pour into a glass container.
- Add the remaining reeds to the container and fan them out.
- To complete the look, drape a necklace or bracelet around the container.
You can play around with your favorite essential oils until you come up with a blend you like. Here are a few of my favorite blends:
- 6 drops grapefruit + 6 drops orange + 4 drops lemon + 2 drops bergamot
- 6 drops lemongrass + 6 drops lavender + 6 drops eucalyptus
- 6 drops lemon + 6 drops lavender + 6 drops grapefruit
- 6 drops tangerine + 6 drops spearmint + 6 drops lemongrass
For even more blends, be sure to pick up the Winter 2017 issue of Willow and Sage.
