Made For Another World Art Journal Project
When I snapped this photo of my daughter following her evening bath one night, I immediately knew that I wanted to use it in an art journaling project. The way she is posed — as though she’s flying — brought to mind one of my favorite quotes by C.S. Lewis, whose books have always delighted and inspired me. I wanted to capture the whimsy that this picture represents, as well as keep the pages messy and full of childlike abandon.
Made for Another World Art Journal Project Tutorial:
To achieve a beautiful but messy burst of colors, I chose to use Dyan Reaveley’s Dylusions Spray Inks. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting Dyan then you know she’s the very definition of whimsy and childlike abandon — her product line is such a true representation of her playful personality, with bright hues and cartoonish designs. Having just ordered Dylusions White Linen Spray Ink for the Shoppe at Somerset, I wanted to test it out against a bright turquoise and lime background.
I started by spraying my pages with water (a trick I learned from Dyan earlier this year), and followed by spraying Vibrant Turquoise, Fresh Lime, and Polished Jade Spray Inks all over the page. I then went over the pages with a full paper towel roll, dabbing away the excess ink.
I adhered the photo to the left page, and then layered several stencils onto both pages, spraying them with white ink. Next, I used a heat tool to dry the pages a little bit, and then I added various patterned tapes to both pages.
I layered more stencils onto the pages and sprayed them, with both ink and water. I stamped circles onto the right-hand page with permanent black ink.
To finish I printed out the quote by C.S. Lewis, cut out the words, and glued them to the journal’s pages with Dina Wakley’s artist-quality gel medium. When everything had dried, I traced around the words with a black journaling pen.
