Dressed-Up Journals Project
As soon as I saw the Layer Frames from Tim Holtz's Idea-ology Collection, I knew I wanted to make something that used them. I was completely charmed by their vintage patchwork design as well as the real machine stitching that is incorporated, so I didn’t want to do too much and hide their appeal. As I was playing around with them and pairing them up with black-and-white vintage photos, I noted that the largest size of frame was perfect for a set of promotional journals I wanted to give a makeover. I also realized that some of the components of the Collage Strips would make nice tabs on the photos, and stapled those into place. Everything came together quickly from there.
Always one to shop my stash, I found some crumpled white paper I’d been saving for something, and used it to cover the journals. The unfortunate-looking logo was still visible through the paper, and when I placed the framed photo directly on the paper to hide it, I felt like something was missing. My eyes landed on a stack of cardboard scraps and knew they’d be the perfect complement to the romantic Layer Frames. After tearing away some of the top layer to reveal the corrugation, I used double-sided tape to adhere everything in place. To finish the journals, I added a quote chip with a saying I felt went well with the chosen vintage photograph.
