6 Inspiring “She Shed” Art Studios

Not everyone has an extra room in their house to dedicate to artistic endeavors, nor the means to rent a studio away from home, but another option that may work for some artists is to add a “she shed” studio to their backyard. Available as kits in all shapes, styles, and sizes, or custom-built from new or reclaimed materials, a shed can offer a creative haven outside the home, providing quiet and focus while keeping you close to family affairs. Many inspiring “she sheds” have graced the pages of In Her Studio, showing us the array of creativity that can be accomplished in a small space and with just a little bit of land. Here is a collection of creative shed studios that would make a lovely addition to any property or to a vision board of artistic goals.

KATE TALCOTT⎟ IN HER STUDIO AUTUMN 2025

1. Kate’s Watercolor Shed

“Well, now I am in the unique position to design my dream shed — again. I recognize what a tremendous privilege it is to do this not once but twice in my lifetime (hopefully this is the last). This time I know what works and what doesn’t, and I’m eager to rebuild with the intention of preserving a rejuvenating art space that works for me.”

HALEE DAMS⎟ IN HER STUDIO AUTUMN 2024

2. Halee’s Flower-Arranging Shed

“This shed was originally used to house garden tools, hoses, and other outside equipment. While cute from the outside, it smelled like lawn mower inside! I honestly never even considered it as a potential creative space, but then one day I was scrolling through Instagram and saw the most gorgeous studio space in an old shed. I had a vision of how sweet this space could be if I put some effort into it. With one photo as my inspiration, I recruited help from my mom and my toddler, and we got to work cleaning out the space and painting everything white.”

STEFANIE BALES⎟ IN HER STUDIO SPRING 2025

3. Stefanie’s Fine Art Shed

“I call my studio the SBFA (Stefanie Bales Fine Art) She Shed (#sbfasheshed). My architect husband and I designed it together to look like an extension of our home. It’s as large as we could make it (10' x 12') without having to permit it or register it as an ADU. We included a sky light and vaulted ceiling to make it feel more spacious, and so I could have elevated shelves and storage space. Wide double doors open up to a deck. I recently attached a fold-down table to the front of it so I’d have a place to work outside when the project permits and it’s just too beautiful to be indoors.”

SUZANNE ELLER⎟ IN HER STUDIO SPRING 2025

4. Suzanne’s Assemblage Shed

“My tiny 9' x 9' ‘she shed’ defies all logic because, somehow, I am able to cram everything in while carving out a corner for creating art. Every square inch is used, and the vibe is a mashup of scary-rusty and comfy-cozy. It looks a bit like a crazy apothecary shop, with jars of all of the things I use to create my pieces.”

MARY MORRIS SOLOMON⎟ IN HER STUDIO SUMMER 2025

5. Mary’s Cardmaking Shed

“In January 2020, I decided I needed more time at home (little did I know what was coming). I ordered a backyard shed from a local building company to become a space where I could pursue my profession from home […] After it was delivered, the pandemic hit and the world shut down — the shed sat unfinished and empty. During that downtime I started to paint little cheerful cards to send to my clients. […] One day while painting, I looked out the window and saw my beautiful white studio sitting all by itself — I experienced a ‘lightbulb moment.’ That same day I hauled a desk and chair out to the building, and slowly, piece by piece, built my ‘little white desk’ space…”

THIRZA VOYSEY⎟ IN HER STUDIO SUMMER 2025

6. Thirza's Writing (& More) Shed

“While we were building the main house on the farm, my husband was building a studio for his graphic design business. I was still working at the kitchen table, and really felt like I needed to expand into my own space. […] As a huge surprise, while I was away on a trip, he moved me into the studio that had been his! […] I came home and was thrilled to sink into my new space and really spread my creative wings! I felt I could really unravel my creative and intuitive self.”
