Project Idea: DIY Spray Ink Mantra Plaque

DIY Spray Ink Mantra Plaque“It’s always the small pieces that make the big picture.” This sentiment reflects the process for creating this plaque perfectly. This plaque is an easy stenciling technique that doesn’t really look like anything special until the last step when the spray ink is applied. Then it comes to life with vibrant color. Try this with different stenciled designs, or use different coordinating colors of spray inks to create endless combinations.

Prime entire plaque with black gesso and let dry.

Lay the stencil flat over the whole plaque and apply texture paste with a palette knife. Try to get an even finish over the whole surface, then lift the stencil straight up.

When texture paste is completely dry, spray different blue and purple inks onto the plaque, blending the colors into one another.

Keep especially dark colors, like the purple, close to the edges and blend the edges thoroughly with the lightest shade of blue. Wick away any excess ink with the edge of a paper towel.

Spray some white ribbon with a coordinating spray ink and set aside to dry.

Thread ribbon through holes at the top of the plaque. Attach Tim Holtz Small Talk stickers to the center of the canvas.

♥ THIS IDEA, LOOK FORWARD TO TRYING IT, THANKS FOR THE HOW-TO INSTRUCTIONS–I’LL BE ‘BORROWING’ A COUPLE OF MY DAUGHTER’S ART SUPPLIES TO TRY IT (ACTUALLY, SHE HAS ALL THE SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR THIS EXCEPT THE QUOTE!)

  2. Pam Brown says:

Thank you for this instruction. I have been trying to make some good stencil art but the sprays are difficult to control. I think using the texture paste will help with my work in that it will catch some of the extra liquid and I can blot that out.
