Birds of a Feather Holiday Cards by Sarah Donawerth
What could possibly make Dina Wakley’s Scribbly Birds stamps cuter? … Holiday hats! These stamps are perfect for Christmas cards, holiday scrapbook pages, or even a Winter Wonderland-themed art journal. For these cards, I combined mixed-media design elements for a grungy, spunky set of cards that are sure to make the season merry and bright.
Birds of a Feather Holiday Cards Directions:
With a credit card or hard piece of plastic (I used an old Borders gift card), paint your card with Sky paint. Set aside to dry.
Use the included stencil from stamp set to create a design on a strip of cardstock in Ruby paint.
Stamp Scribbly Birds and their hats onto white cardstock with permanent black ink.
Scribble soft chalk pastels over the birds in various shades of blue, highlighting the wings and chest with different shades of blue. Blend with your finger until smooth. Spray with a fixative to keep your pastels from smudging. Note: Gelatos, watercolor pencils, or brush markers would also work for adding color to your bird images.
Color in the Santa hats with Deep Scarlett Red brush pen. Apply modeling paste with a palette knife to tip of hat and brim to add some faux fluff. Stipple the paste for added texture.
Rub chalk pastel over strip of cardstock with red, stenciled design. Spray with a fixative. Adhere with gel medium to center of card.
Stamp your scribbly birds directly onto your card so that you can plan your design around where the colored birds will be placed. Note: When cutting out your colored scribbly birds, you can cut off the feet and other outlying scribbles because the stamped design underneath will peak out and fill in those details.
With Ruby and White paint, stencil dots onto the corners of your card. Splatter watered-down red paint over the surface of the card.
Paint a square of cardstock with Ruby paint, then stamp with sentiment from stamp set in white ink. Apply white chalk marks around edges. Adhere to center of the card.
Glue colored bird overtop of the stamped image on your card. Attach hat to top of bird’s head. Add some finishing touches with a white chalk pencil and seal with fixative.
