The Grungy Canvas — A Dina Wakley Inspired Project

I love nothing more than learning new ways to paint or collage a canvas, which is why I love art books so much. They are a much more affordable way to learn a new technique than a workshop or online class.

When Dina’s book, "Art Journal Courage," arrived in our offices, I was immediately inspired. I already was a fan of her work, so I jumped at the chance to create a project for The Shoppe at Somerset that uses a technique straight out of her book.

The Grungy Canvas — A Dina Wakley Inspired Project Directions

Prime the canvas with gesso. Let dry.

Start applying layers of acrylic paint in turquoise and light blue using your fingers and a dry foam brush to give the background a more organic feel.

Next, apply green acrylic paint in the same manner. Using a palette knife, randomly apply white gesso to create a little variation.

Once all of the paint dries, stamp Grungy Circles Cling Mount Stamp with black permanent ink.

Stamp Grungy Silhouette Cling Mount onto white cardstock with black permanent ink, and cut out.

To finish, glue two strips of vintage text and the cut out of the Grungy Silhouette.
