An old book becomes an eerie witch-themed assemblage in the hands of artist Kelley Shaw in “A Witch’s Cabin in the Woods.” As Kelley shares:

“The idea of powerful, mysterious beings who dwell in hidden places, brewing potions and casting spells, has deeply influenced my artistic vision [ … ] Every element in my diorama is crafted with intention. The tiny spell books, scrolls, and potion bottles serve as symbols of the craft. I take special care in adding textures and colors that evoke the feeling of a hidden cottage in the woods.”

SHERRY SWINFORD | SOMERSET STUDIO SUMMER 2026

Inspired by the work and culture of Frida Kahlo, Sherry Swinford creates a collection of clay figurines that pay homage to Día de los Muertos, a holiday in early November that honors the dead. In “Wings to Fly,” Sherry explains:

“Artist and icon Frida Kahlo once wrote in her diary, ‘Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?’ Her work, and this quote, reflect her use of creativity to triumph over physical constraints. These ‘FridaFly’ figures are a nod to her Hispanic culture and Día de los Muertos style, with sugar skulls serving as a reminder that ‘life is sweet’ and the wings as a symbol of fragility and freedom. I see them as a representation of all who have overcome obstacles to soar high.”

PATTY WOOTTON | SOMERSET STUDIO SUMMER 2024

Horror fans find no shortage of inspiration during this time of year, and Patty Wootton celebrates her favorite genre by referencing classic literature in, “Mary Shelley: Gothic Vignettes.” As Patty recalls:

“In my youth, Mary Shelley’s classic novel ‘Frankenstein’ inspired my family and me to write our own horror stories. Sitting by the fire in my cousin’s old house, we would read and write tales of horror. Our get-togethers in the evenings were the highlight of our week.”
