Travel goes hand-in-hand with summer. During this time of year, we all hope to get away from our lives for a bit to explore the world. And these explorations needn’t be extravagant; sometimes, simply visiting a new city can reinvigorate the mind, heart, and body, which in turn refills the well of artistic inspiration. Artists often capture their travels within art journals, using an array of media, from collage to paint, thread, and beyond. We’ve selected some travel-inspired artwork from the pages of Art Journaling to provide ideas for recording a recent trip or to encourage you to capture your wanderlust upon the page.
A Fabric Travel Art Journal by Toni DeRuntz
“I loved going on my first cruise ever with a girlfriend I hadn’t seen in years, and it was a great way to reconnect and see a place I hadn’t visited before. The trip was so much fun that I wanted to capture it in a form that would be easy to look at and a little more durable than paper, so cloth worked well; it’s also very touchable!”

Irish Traveler by Tina Walker
“Ireland has always been on my travel bucket list. [ … ] In 2018, Ireland became a reality, and I made the jump across the big pond with my dear friend [ … ] Every time I look back on this journal, it will instantly transport me to that moment un time. Travel Memories in Watercolors by Toni DeRuntz
“When I travel, I take photos of beautiful landscapes and locales to paint at a later time. Usually, after I get settled in a hotel at night, I will complete one painting. If I have a long flight, I will sometimes complete a painting on the plane, using a phone stand so I can easily use my photos for reference.”
