Do-It-Yourself: Art Journal Inspiration

February 6th, 2013

Art Journaling with Graffiti Glam StampsWe’ve been long overdue for another art journaling project and the arrival of the Creative Journal by Dyan Reaveley and jumbo beeswax crayons by Faber-Castell to The Shoppe was just what we needed to ignite some inspiration. Both products complemented each other perfectly and when layered with Traci Bautista’s new mixed-media stamps, we were able to create some stunning pages that show off an easy crayon-resist technique.

Instructions:

The Creative Journal by Dyan Reaveley is the perfect palette for art journalers and mixed-media artists. I decided to try creating an art journal page and test out the paper which I found to be of superior quality, along with new Faber-Castell crayons which are delightfully smooth and creamy.

I started by stamping Traci Bautista’s Lily Doodle stamp design across the middle of two of the pages using black StazOn ink. Using a white crayon, I went back and colored in various areas of the flowers. Next, I used the alcohol ink applicator with Distress Inks and lightly rubbed the inks over the flowers. This created a “crayon resist” effect so that the spaces I colored in white crayon stayed white, but the rest of the area soaked up the Distress Inks.

For the rest of the journal page, I added various elements including patterned papers, washi tape, stamping and some extra crayon. On the blue patterned paper, I painted over it with a light coat of gesso and water, and on the polka dot paper, I covered it with strips of white washi tape.

I did some extra doodling around the stamped flowers with the crayons and wrote some quotes inspired by the blue patterned paper. In the bottom right corner, I added a piece of pink patterned paper because it just felt right!

Sometimes while staring at a blank journal page, we need a little inspiration.

Here are some journaling prompts to help you move past “square one” and get you journaling in no time. These ideas were originally featured in the Winter 2013 issue of Art Journaling.

  • Write a letter to a non-person: a season, a month, a feeling, etc. Shared by Kathryn Zbrzezny
  • What is the best thing about being you?  Shared by Karen Grunberg
  • Create a page of questions.  Sometimes a page of questions can represent where you life is at the moment. Shared by Marcia Beckett
  • Use a funny or memorable Facebook status update from a friend as a prompt. Shared by Marcia Beckett
  • Write down your thoughts in small, random chunks, in varying directions all over the page. Doodle around the thoughts, connecting them with line work, and later complete the page with color.  Shared by Belinda Fireman
  • “The color of springtime is in the flowers; the color of winter is in the imagination.” – Terri Guillemets
