[On the Blog] Lace and Pink Collaged Canvas by Sarah Donawerth

Project by Sarah Donawerth.

For everyone who crafts, we all know the dilemma of the craft stash. Some things are in the craft stash because they are the odds and ends that are unusable for one reason or another. However, there are other items in the craft stash that are there because they are so beloved, that the pressure to craft something perfect keeps you from starting. In my stash, I have these in a separate box. They are the pieces that have sentimental value, that were higher priced, or are the last remaining pieces of my favorite kits. When I stare into that box, I see my favorite things — lace, book text, pink and rosy hues, and vintage details.

The goal for this collaged piece was to incorporate all my favorite things. I wouldn’t call myself shabby chic, but I love all things lacy, vintage, and blush-colored. There is just something about that palette of textures and colors that immediately fills me with joy. When I discovered these vintage postcards in the archives of our offices, I couldn’t wait to use them in a mixed-media piece. And better yet, we’re offering these pieces of ephemera as a free download at the end of this post! Read the rest of this entry »

[On the Blog] Perspectives and Whimsies Mini Canvases Project + A Giveaway

Sometimes, it’s all about how you view something. A simple change in perspective can make all the difference in mixed-media art. A whimsy is defined as “an odd or fanciful notion” and that is what these mini canvases are. They are a collection of the odd and fanciful items from The Shoppe and experiment with gelatos and new materials, like Relics and Artifacts, to create something that is decidedly full of new perspectives and whimsies. “The inspiration for these bangles came from a tote bag I found online that said ‘I still believe in 398.2.’ This number is the Dewey Decimal system call number for fairy tales. It seemed like a coded message — a way of announcing to the world that I still love a happy ending and that everything can be solved with a fairy godmother or a mermaid … To capture my love of reading, I created these bangles with the call numbers of fairy tales and Jane Austen. Jane Austen has always held a special place in my heart ever since I read ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in high school. These bangles are a constant reminder of what I love about literature — clever writing and a happily ever after.”
