[On the Blog] Free Article Download: Mixed-Media Sample Book by Karen Turner from Sew Somerset

“As a textile artist, texture, color, and lines fascinate me. I also like to find out how different materials sit together, how they handle, and what their effects and possibilities might be. Sometimes I make small samples before embarking on a major piece of art. My favorite way to collect such samples together is to make them into a cloth book. This is such an effective way to present tactile little samples of cloth and stitch, because it keeps the work together in a space that is small yet very accessible. It also functions as your very own reference book when you compose and assemble future projects. These days I prefer to stitch by hand, but this little book combines hand and machine stitching, as well as some unlikely and unusual materials.”

“One of my favorite aspects of art journaling is having a place to experiment. There is less pressure when working in a journal than on a canvas. The effects I achieve when experimenting are what become my artsy-looking backgrounds. An interesting background can turn a simple focal image into art. The beauty of it is that making backgrounds is a matter of trying out tips, tricks, and techniques instead of depending on complicated skills. Anyone can build up a bag of tricks and use a few to get a gorgeous journal page.”
