A hand-me-down sweater … a raggedy old skirt from the thrift store … a plain T-shirt … all of these items can be repurposed into new, fashionable finds with just a few tools and a little creativity. We invite you to submit your own altered and embellished clothing items to be considered for publication in Altered Couture. Items published in the past include skirts, dresses, pants, tops, jackets, vests, shoes, and accessories.

Please submit a “before” photo along with your altered creation, if available. Photos and illustrations showing your process are also strongly encouraged. We also encourage you to submit to our challenges below.
Deadline: September 15th

Challenges

No-Sew Alterations
With so many different ways to alter clothing and accessories these days, sometimes a sewing machine isn’t necessary. For those of us who might not be as knowledgeable in that field, or are looking for an inspiring new challenge, this one is for you! We challenge our DIY readers to upcycle their wearables without any sewing at all. Instead, we want to see how creative you can get with glue, safety pins, staples, iron-on adhesive, and more. Maybe try your hand at making fringe or adding embellishments? We can’t wait to see the results!
Deadline: September 15, 2017

Age of Aquarius
“When the moon is in the Seventh House / And Jupiter aligns with Mars / Then peace will guide the planets / And love will steer the stars…” These lyrics by The 5th Dimension’s song, “The Age of Aquarius” from 1969 bring back a flood of memories. Whether you lived through Woodstock, just heard about it, consider yourself an old hippie or are into peace, love, and rock ’n roll, we want to see your interpretation in doll form. From Janis Joplin to flower power to the actual astrological meaning, there are plenty of ways to express yourself. Peace out, baby. Results will be published in our Spring 2018 Issue.
Deadline: September 15, 2017

Paper Personas
Inspired by Judith Thibaut’s doll “George in Drag” (Spring 2010) and in the spirit of Lynne Perrella’s book Beyond Paper Dolls, we’ve created a new department in Art Doll Quarterly that will feature one fabulous, artistic and beautifully executed paper doll in each issue. We’re looking for expressive paper personas crafted with innovative techniques and art mediums — over-the-top, imaginative interpretations of the human form. Send us your thought-provoking and innovative paper personas for publication consideration. Please note “Paper Personas” on your submission.
Deadline: Ongoing.

  1. I have been making gorgeous houses out of trashed cardboard, the corrugated type..then after the houses are made, I mount them onto large canvases into neighborhoods sorta, along with lace and other embellishments…everyone is loving them

    • Sarah says:

If you’re working exclusively with trashed cardboard, then GreenCraft Magazine would be a perfect fit. Otherwise, I would submit your artwork to Somerset Apprentice, Somerset Studio, or Somerset Studio Gallery. Please let me know if you have any questions about the process of submitting your artwork.
