Rustic Chatelaine Necklace and a Nunn Design Giveaway

Rustic Chatelaine Necklace

Project by Sarah Donawerth

This project was inspired by the Victorian chatelaine. It was a set of chains hung from a belt that women would use to carry their keys, thimbles, scissors, pencils, fans, or other useful accessories. Even Mrs. Hughes from Downton Abbey had a chatelaine to hang her housekeeping keys from. These jewelry items could be very practical or very ornate.  Many Victorian examples of the chatelaine had finely etched silver accessories attached. This rustic necklace brings back the trend with keys, inspirational tags, and even a message in a bottle hanging from it.

Rustic Chatelaine Necklace Project Directions:

Rustic Chatelaine Necklace

Beginning with the message in a bottle, type a message on a 1” high strip of paper. With black ink, distress the edges. I typed “live simply. love generously. learn constantly.” It’s a good mantra to live by, so it seemed fitting to include it in a secret message for the necklace.

Rustic Chatelaine Necklace

Roll up the message, put it in the bottle, and glue the bottle cap to the top. Wrap black wire around the bottle’s cap, gluing in place if needed. The end of the wire should be bent inward, then woven underneath the rest of the wire. Separate chain in to 5 pieces, each a different length. Attach the five pieces to a large jumpring. Attach the itsy bottle to a large jumpring. Rustic Chatelaine Necklace project

Cut two 36” lengths of hand-dyed ribbon and one 36” length of black lace.

Add the jumpring with the chains and the jumpring with the itsy bottle to another large jumpring, then pull black lace and two lengths hand-dyed ribbon through this jumpring and knot the ends together.

To each chain end, add an antique key, philosophy tag, or chandelier drop.
