Pretty Petals Packaging Project by Christen Hammons

With Mother’s Day and May Day having recently passed, it seems everyone spaces are overflowing with flowers. Despite our best efforts, it’s always a shame when our bouquets begin to wilt. If only we could admire their beauty a little longer.

Our director of photography, Johanna Love, always tries to get the most out of her flowers she gets as gifts or the ones she purchases to use as props. Whenever I visit her in her office, it’s always a treat to see flowers all over the place, all in different stages of their lifecycle. Seeing this inspired me to dry* my flowers and keep some for myself while passing some along to others.

My recent preference when wrapping gifts has been to use what I have on hand rather than purchasing paper and embellishments that will just wind up in the trash bin. My go-to supplies are fabric scraps and dried greenery. Combining these two things is such a simple way to make a gift look elegant. All you need to do is knot the fabric around your package (in this case I was giving a friend a few artisan soaps), tuck in your dried flowers, add a tag, and you’re all set. If you want to uplevel this idea, you can wrap your gift in a scarf or handkerchief, which will also double as a gift.

*For better drying results, trim the stem of the flower and place into a small jar with the petals open and facing up.
