We
are very happy to offer select products from GOLDEN Artist Colors®
at The Shoppe at Somerset. The May/June
2004 issue of Somerset Studio® features an article in the
Mélange section on a workshop conducted by Artist Barbara
DePirro, one of a national and international group of thirty professional
Working Artists sponsored by GOLDEN Artist Colors®. After seeing
her work, we knew we just had to offer some of these amazing products!
Soft
Gel (Gloss) Thinner than GOLDEN® Heavy Body Acrylics, Soft Gels are pourable,
holding only soft peaks. This product is an excellent glue for collage
because it works with the various sizes and thicknesses of the elements.
When mixed with a small amount of color, the gloss produces a brilliant
glaze. Soft Gel Gloss is the medium used in Mélange for the photocopy
transfer technique, as well as for creating gel transfer skins.

Regular
Gel (Matte) This product has a creamy consistency, and is ideal for extending
paint for economy and regulating translucency without altering the paint
thickness. This gel holds moderate peaks and texture. It is also an
all-purpose glue to be used in any collage and assemblage work. Regular
Gels are translucent when dry.

Gesso GOLDEN® Gesso is an all-acrylic liquid ground for preparing
surfaces for painting. It offers an excellent surface for adhesion of
acrylic and oil paints. It is often used to prepare canvas for painting.
This gesso remains flexible when dry, so we like to use it in our altered
books, too.

Black
Gesso Used for the same applications as the GOLDEN® Gesso, this gesso
is pure black, and is sometimes the background color needed for that
special project. Black Gesso provides a rich, matte black ground. Many
colors, especially metallic and interference colors look dramatically
different on a black ground. The Black Gesso is also flexible when dry,
and can add variety to the effects in your altered books.

Interference
Gold (Fine) Acrylic
The
latest addition to our collection of GOLDEN® Artist Colors and Mediums
is this luscious Heavy Body Interference Acrylic Color. Interference
Gold (fine) is gorgeous by itself, and it has a different appearance
depending upon whether you use it on a light or a dark background. Interference
is the naturally occurring phenomenon you see on objects in nature such
as a butterfly wing or abalone shells. This is the paint used to create
our Silk Fabric Alteration sample in
The Studio. Artist Linda Blinn mixed this Interference Gold Acrylic
with the Quinacridone Fluid Acrylics to achieve a beautifully shimmering
piece of fabric that feels like paper. Because these paints remain flexible,
they can be used on fabrics as well as a multitude of other surfaces.
This Heavy Body Acrylic comes in a 4 fl. oz. jar.
These
small but mighty bottles of fluid acrylic pigment are one of the most
versatile tools in an artists arsenal. You can use these pigments
to alter the colors of existing fabrics, producing an instant
set of color-coordinated fabrics to use in her projects. These Fluid
Acrylics mix with the Gel Mediums, providing even more textures and
effects for your creative projects. Net wt. 1 fl. oz. / 29.5 ml
Soft Gel Gloss
is used as an applied photo copy transfer. This means the
copies must be made on a toner copier (not a laser or ink-jet copier).
For the background
Barbara combined Pyrrole Red, Gold Green and Ultra Marine Violet, then
coated the board with Polymer Medium Gloss. The application of Soft
Gel Gloss prepares the surface to receive the image, which is placed
ink-side down, then burnished. After it dries, the paper is sprayed
with water and gently rubbed to be removed. The image remains.
Another technique
is to create a gel transfer skin using a plastic sheet or tray. The
image is placed face-up on the plastic surface and held in place while
coated with Soft Gel Gloss. After it dries, the process is repeated
seven times and left to dry overnight. To remove the paper, soak in
warm water until saturated and rub off the paper leaving the image on
the film. Barbara used her own photographs from France and Italy.
First pick out two large and two small flowers from the Maya Road Chipboard Blossoms IV (5MR-C031). Apply a coat of GOLDEN white gesso (5GO-3550) to all the chipboard pieces. Let dry. Paint two of your pieces with white acrylic paint. Paint the other two pieces with Making Memories Meadow acrylic paint (5MA-23673). Stamp one of the white flowers with the honeycomb portion of Collage Cube (C8418) using Meadow acrylic paint. Stamp dots on the other white flower with a pencil eraser using Making Memories Meadow acrylic paint. Leave one of the green flowers alone. Stamp the other one with the honeycomb portion of Collage Cube using white acrylic paint. Let dry. Assemble using foam tape. Glue a pink button to the fronts of the flowers and a pin back to the backs of the flowers. Wear proudly!
A Nature Study By Christen Olivarez
Begin with the Corina Book from Creative Imaginations (5CI-16353). Using a craft knife cut off two panels from the accordion book. Coat both panels with GOLDEN white gesso (5GO-3550) using a foam brush. Set aside to dry.
From the Cavallini & Company Natural History Carte Postale Vintage Postcard Set (5CPCP-NH) pick two postcards. Coat both postcards with gesso, leaving just the main image visible. Let dry. With a charcoal pencil outline the main image and then blend with a blending stump.
For the starfish postcard, I stippled Making Memories Robin’s Egg Blue acrylic paint (5MA-29029) around the image. I then painted a border around it all with tan acrylic paint. Once that dried, I stamped the polka dot side of Romance Trims (C8463) with white gesso on the tan border. For the bird postcard, I sponged Making Memories Evergreen acrylic paint (5MA-23674) around the birds, leaving a small white border. I then sponged a layer of white gesso on top of that.
For the accordion book panels, I sponged on various shades of acrylic paint until I achieved the desired color. For the starfish panel, I stamped the honeycomb portion of the Collage Cube (C8418) with Timber Brown StazOn Ink (5TS-BROWN) on the top left and bottom right edges. I randomly placed labels from the Cavallini & Company Ephemera Vintage Labels set (5CPLABEL-EPH) that I had first edged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink (5TH-TIM19527). Once everything was in place, I adhered the postcards to the panel with a coat of GOLDEN Soft Gel Gloss (5GO-3010). I then applied an additional layer of Soft Gel Gloss over everything with a sponge brush.
Start with a
piece of Dupioni silk fabric. Prepare a palette (we used a paper plate)
with some GOLDEN Interference Gold (fine) Acrylic (coming soon to
The Shoppe at Somerset...watch for it
here!). Squeeze some Quinacridone Gold (5GO-2301)
near the Interference Gold, and blend together with a foam brush,
loading more Interference Gold on one side of the brush, and gradually
adding more of the Quin Gold. Brush the paints onto the silk, blending
as you wish. This paint gives great coverage on the silk. Add more
Quin Gold and work back into the previous color. Continue with other
colors of the Quinacridone Fluid Acrylics and Interference Gold, blending
as you wish and working each one into the previous color. For this
sample we used Quinacridone Crimson (5GO-2290),
then Quinacridone Magenta (5GO-2305 - Discontinued), and finally
Golden Quinacridone Red paint (5GO-2310 - Discontinued) to complement the
Quinacridone Gold. Youll be amazed at the results you get from
this technique. After it has dried, you have a one-of a-kind piece
of art fabric, and the texture of the fabric now has a paper-like
quality. StazOn ink (5TS-BLACK)
works well for stamping on the painted silk. Foil can also be applied
to the surface using a small heating tool or foil glue. Embellishments
can be sewed or glued on to the silk making it appealing for both
paper and fabric projects.
Cant you
just see this fabric as a cover for an art journal, or as the base
for a stamped and collaged creation?
To
begin, cut a piece of 140 lb.coldpress watercolor paper into 3-1/2
by 2-1/2 pieces for the base for each ATC. Paint ATC base with
Lumiere paints and allow to dry. Stamp image (Stampers Anonymous) with
black ink. The first card shows this base, which was created in multiples
to be used as the base for an ATC series. The finished card shows a
wash of Quinacridone Gold (5GO-2301) applied
to part of this background to age the color and give added
interest to the card surface. Apply the Quinacridone Gold to a plastic
game piece, let dry, and glue to card using Regular
Gel Matte (5GO-3030) as the glue. Weight this down to dry. Embellish
card with letters and numbers from Copper
Alphabet Tiles (5ST-AC917C). Glue a faux gem to the game piece,
and a type key sticker to the lower corner of the card. Cover the sticker
with a Medium Circle Blank Page Pebble (5MA-22923 - Discontinued) for added dimension.
