Glass Slides

Originally manufactured for use with microscopes, these glass slides are anything but clinical! Artists have used them to create embellishments, jewelry, and additions to journals and scrapbook pages. Often used with copper or foil tape, you simply choose something as your "content", sandwich the material between two of the slides, and run the tape around the edges of the slide. Those wishing to make the slides into jewelry can solder the edges and attach a jump ring–making a unique and custom necklace pendant! Virtually any thin material can be used between the slides, including paper, transparencies, ribbon, photos, clay, pressed flowers, and ink. Each slide is 1" x 3", and each pack contains 10 slides.

Lisa Soares created this sample, which is likely to end up on one of her scrapbook pages. To make a similar embellishment, start by selecting a quote from the Box of Thoughts on Love - Discontinued. Place a glass slide over "thought", trimming if necessary. Wrap silver tape around all four edges of the slide, securing "thought" on the back. Run two strips of tape along the top and bottom of thought, with the tape on top of the glass as decorative trim. Lightly hammer small silver flat head eyelets on a hard surface to flatten back, and secure eyelets to corners with glue. This sample is easily attached to a surface with Memory Book Glue Dots or Pop Up Glue Dots.

Please see additional glass slide art samples in the Mélange section of Somerset Studio, January/February 2003 issue.

Artist Terry Tyson likes to experiment with different materials (such as the inks and clay on these slides) to see what effects he can get.

Glass Medical Slide

Glass Medical Slide by Linda Blinn
Sandwich Begin Transparency Sheet (5ARBEGIN) and Read Me Transparency (5ARREAD) between two glass slides. Apply copper tape to edges and burnish with a bone folder. Make a copper wire loop and secure with copper tape on both sides. Add a bow or other embellishments.

Tip: Layering two or more slides adds depth. Start with a background like handwriting, then experiment by laying images on top.
