Cover Artist Altered Couture Autumn 2008

COVER ARTIST: Lilla Le Vine

The gorgeous corset that graces the Autumn 2008 cover of Altered Couture was created by Lilla Le Vine. “;Annabelle’s Follies” was in response to Altered Couture’s challenge for “;Altered Lingerie.” Believe it or not, this vibrant garment began as a plain white bustier bra. Lilla worked her magic with dye and lace and created this gorgeous design that was perfect for promoting Altered Couture’s special lingerie issue. Ohh-la-la! Lilla’s work has also been featured in other Stampington & Company publications, including feature articles in Sew Somerset and Haute Handbags. We recently had a chance to interview our talented cover artist. You can read Lila Le Vine blogs ny visiting http://www.justlilla.blogspot.com

Q: What was your reaction to learning you were going to be a cover artist?

My reaction was, totally surprised and humble as can be. The cover artists seem so professional and talented and now am I really one of the group?

Q: Where do you get most of your artistic inspiration?

I work alone out here in the vast Pacific so to have company in my endeavors makes me very happy. [For] inspiration I spend time outdoors daydreaming ideas. Color inspires me a lot and I follow the trends in design as much as possible. Travel too is a great source of inspiration, I take lots of photos and use them to set the “mood.”

Q: How long have you been creating art?

I have to say, really always. Growing up in a remote part of New Zealand we had to make our own amusements as well as create our clothes and accessories. I used to paint and draw my surroundings, and practice all kinds of needlework from the moment I could thread a needle.

Q: What's your favorite medium?

Probably textiles, paper and fibers, the older the better.

Q: In your article, you say that Annabelle’s Follies has vintage look, perhaps inspired by the Roaring ’20s or Moulin Rouge. How does the past inspire your work

[Memory art] is a big part of my life, I am a very romantic. Love to remember the good old days. In my mind I wander the lives and lifestyles of those who have gone before. Then I try to recreate some of those ideas before they are lost.

Q: What advice would you give to an artist intimidated to submit artwork?

I did give advice to a friend who asked, just recently. She is a prolific artist but thinks she is not good enough. I suggested she send in some art and see what happens. If she didn't she would never know. I would encourage all if I could

Q: What projects are you currently working on?

I am making costumes and accessories for a recycling show here. Almost finished some projects for several Somerset publications. They include aprons, Altered Couture and Sew Somerset items. I teach classes and I am making purses and jewelry for sale.

Q: Besides your art, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I swim and hike all year long and take photos everywhere. I belong to an altered book group here in Hawaii, and on the ‘Net. Hunting for supplies is a lot of fun. Reading too, I love biography and mystery novels.

Q: Favorite food?

I do not eat meat so I am fond of pizza, tarts, vegetable dishes and puddings. Bread pudding must be right at the top of my favorites..

Q: Favorite quotation?

“May the happiest day of your past, be the saddest day of your future.” — In my autograph book from my teacher in about 5th grade.

Q: Favorite movie?

Zorba the Greek
