Vintage Holiday Recipe Cards
By Vanessa Spencer

Begin with an old book cover – I purchased mine at the second hand book store at my local library for just 50 cents! Don’t throw away the pages you tear out because these will be handy for a future project!

To make the recipe cards, use the Basic Grey Ambrosia collection (5BG-CAMB1430) and cut all the cards down to 4”x6” or depending on the size of your book cover you may need to cut smaller or larger. Use a corner rounding punch to round all the corners. Distress the edges of all the cards using the Tim Holtz Paper Distresser (5TO-370). Then distress the edges again using Walnut Stain distress ink (5TH-TIM19534). Remember it doesn’t have to look neat – the goal is to achieve an old antiqued look so the messier and more distressed – the better!

To embellish the recipe cards I used vintage music paper that I had purchased through a Stampington "French Flea Market" sale, journaling notes with recipe images from our Homemade journaling pad (5HV-HIJ3), pieces of mulberry paper with vintage floral images from the Prima Collage Collection (5PM-850067) and the new Tim Holtz journaling tickets (5TH92732). Cut your pieces down to size and distress the edges using your paper distresser and ink. Attach pieces to the recipe card as desired – I find it easiest to play around with the arrangement first then glue once I’m happy with the layout.

Once all the pieces are attached you can spray the cards with Cinnamon Glimmer Mist (5TA-CINN) to give it a rustic charm. Try creating some cards that are plain and not embellished for you to jot down your favorite Holiday recipes. To add a little charm to those cards use some chipboard scrolls (5MR-C016) as a stencil and spray over with Glimmer Mist. You can then use the chipboard as an embellishment or save it for a future project.

Attach two pieces of paper to the insides of the book to file the cards in. Use a strong liquid adhesive and remember to only glue 3 sides of the card – you must leave the top side open in order to slide the cards in! Embellish the front and spine of the book using stickers from the Ambrosia Collection (5BG-CAMB1430).

There are many alternatives to a vintage book cover for this project. Trying using some of these creative products from The Shoppe to display your holiday recipe cards:

Tear the edge of a piece of newspaper, and glue to a sheet of paper from the Ambrosia Paper Pad by Basic Grey (5BG-AMB1431). Rip any excess newspaper from the edges. Using a Chipboard Scroll (5MR-C016) as a stencil, spray Sage Glimmer Mist (5TA-SAGE) onto the corner of the paper.

Cut a 5 3/4" square of cardboard for your frame, and cut a 2 1/2" opening in the center. Align the cardboard onto the back of the paper and trace the opening onto it. Use a ruler to draw an "X" into the center of the traced opening and cut along the lines to create flaps. Glue the paper onto the cardboard, folding the flaps to the back of the frame and gluing in place.

Affix the scroll that was used as a stencil (which is now covered in Glimmer Mist) to the top corner of the frame. Add a favorite photo or image from a collage sheet (5ARROSY) to complete.
