  1. Patty Radish says:

I LOVE Valentines Day decor! These projects a re great!

  2. It was Valentines Day 1991. I had been running a successful balloon delivery and costume business since Valentines Day, 1984. I spent a long, frigid, snowy New England day delivering custom made valentine balloon bouquets with a song, to unsuspecting loved ones. I had gotten caught in a snow pile, had my windshield build up with ice and slid my way from place to place, all while dressed in a valentine dress complete with a tufted heart and wings but not designed for a blustery winter’s day. Each time I drove back up to the store to reload and be on my way again, I was greeted by the waves of a Big Penguin, who had also braved the days forecast, to help bring people into the store. When the day finally came to an end around 9 p.m. I was tired and cold but filled with the smiles and Love of all of the days delivery recipients. As I locked up the store and pulled myself into my van to make my last journey of the day, there on the steering wheel was a small bouquet of Roses, wrapped in brown paper. I had no idea how they got there, or who had left them? But it was just so nice to know, that I too, was Loved… This Valentines Day will be 23 years since I received that little bouquet from my Wonderful Husband, “the Penguin”.

  3. Becky Green says:

My fond Valentine memory is making those foil covered shoe boxes & decorating them to hold those little Valentines we’d receive at school during our Valentine Party’s! Such a LOVELY TIME if you think about it, letting people know they are LOVED & APPRECIATED!!! From the Teacher to each class mate! To this day, I LOOOOOOOVE Valentines Day & Retro Valentines!!!!!!!:)

  4. Swan Thompson says:

My beloved, twisted spouse, Jim, is quite cynical about Valentine’s Day, calling it a “greeting card holiday.” Since he’s a cartoonist, he doesn’t buy commercial cards. Knowing his strong feelings about Valentine’s Day, I was surprised and delighted early in our marriage when he came home with a box of Valentine’s Day candy for me, along with an identical box (in miniature) for our daughter, and presented them to us as “the two ladies I love most in the world.”

Handmade valentines followed the next year. Do I need to mention that he swept me off my feet with that gesture, too?

Romance isn’t delivered on a schedule, but from the heart. I love this man enough to give him the caramel from my box of candy – the caramel! After 39 years, he still has my heart.

  5. My favorite Valentine’s memory is my wedding day almost 27 years ago. Decorating for that day was the all time topper for DIY Valentine decorations. My mother crotchet 40 small red and white dollies to wrap the pieces of wedding cake in. I still have several of those dollies tucked away, one of the few things I have to remember my mother by after her passing 6 years ago, also on Valentines Day. I often remark to my husband that my mom was making sure I would never forget her by leaving us on our anniversary. That day is a bittersweet day for me. One of celebration and of sorrow. I often mark the day by focusing on all the positive memories I have of my mom and the love I still have for her. My husband and I usually purchase a plant or tree for the yard that we plant on her birthday in May. And of course, my husband and I are very much in love still after 27 years so we spend the day together celebrating our marriage.

  6. Chrstine C Dahlin says:

ahh, love! Every valentines day my I would bake sugar cookies in several different heart shapes and then turn them over to my sons and husband to decorate. Everyone was so creative and individual and we all had such fun together. I’m willing to guess that I’m the only one who recalls how sticky and messy the kitchen would be!

  7. HawaiianLibrarian says:

One fond memory is celebrating Valentine’s Day at our library storytime w/ all the children dressed in pink, red, or hearts, listening to stories, making crafts, and dancing to Barney’s “I love you, You love me”.

  8. Maureen says:

I can’t pick one particular Valentine’s Day, but all of the ones when I was a little girl and my Mom would give us a Valentine and some candy hearts with the cute sayings on them. . . It always made me feel special, and now that my Mom is gone I miss it more than ever.

  9. meloissa says:

It was such fun helping my 6 children do the Valentine cards for their school mates.
I would buy boxes of the candy hearts and boxes of the school sized cards.
the children would pick out a candy heart with just the right saying for each card and enclose it with the card.
It was such a good way for them to practice writing names and reading the sayings on the candy and cards.
All their school friends liked getting the candy in the cards.
It made them seem extra special.

  10. Cathy C says:

No fond memory, but thanks for the inspiration.

  11. crafty girl says:

I remember how fun it was to hand out and receive valentines at school when I was a kid. I wonder why we don’t continue that tradition at work.

  12. JoDitt says:

For years my husband felt like if he couldn’t get me some big or expensive gift then he might as well not get me anything. I have finally convinced him that a handwritten note of his love for me means more to me than anything. Last year I received only a card with a handwritten note and a bag of chocolate mints (my favorite!) It made me feel SO LOVED!!!

  13. Heather B says:

Every year my grandpa was alive he’d give all his girls – heart shape boxes of candy and a card. One year he gave me a box that played love me tender by Elvis. My grandpa also sang this song to me at my 16th birthday. I always loved to see his penmanship in cards. He always wrote in small caps- probably because of his days in the navy or dork as an engineer- regardless, I always loved to see his penmanship. When I think of Valentine’s Day- I can’t help but remember how loved he made me feel then and all year round . I still have the love me tender box all these years later.

  14. Lisa Wilson says:

Having a chronic illness(MS) I have many hours spent with only my racing mind… and it always wants to create! Stampington offers my mind the opportunity to see other creations which in turn helps to ease my longing to dig through old buttons or vintage fabrics until I am able. The inspiration I get is the best valentine I could ever receive. I cherish each issue I have. I keep them as a lawyer would keep his books of law, only I probably reference mine more then he would! I take one to every dr. appointment I have… I have shared them with so many people sitting there in the waiting room. Many have never seen them, they have such strikingly beautiful covers, everyone is intrigued and anxiously waiting for me to sit it down, so I share my passions and they share theirs. You have no idea the joy that you have brought to so many people like me who at times have felt like our lives have been taken from us. To have something beautiful to gaze upon and dream about helps to get through the rough times, and I thank you for the dreams…

    • Bethany says:

Wow Lisa! What a beautiful testimony you’ve shared with us. We’re so humbly honored to be able to contribute to your joy during times of affliction. You’ve inspired us just as much (if not more) than our magazines have inspired you.

      Blessings,
      Bethany

  15. My fond Valentine’s Day memory is when my family celebrated with my maternal grandmother. It was a day where everyone came together to show expressions of love and gratitude for her- potluck style! It was so special! I remember asking her if she could be my Valentine. She replied, “Yes, baby, I’m already your Valentine!” Still makes my heart pitter-patter. And to think, this happened nearly 20 years ago!!

  16. Janeen Steer says:

My favorite Valentine’s Day is my Wedding Day, 1996, to my sweet husband, Franklin! I felt like a princess and he looked so adorable in his white tux. Our honeymoon included a lovely horse-drawn carriage through downtown Salt Lake and up into Memory Grove. We snuggled under blankets and sipped hot chocolate to keep warm. Ahhh! Brings tears to my eyes just reminiscing about it. <3 <3 <3

  17. My favourite valentine is the one that was hand written (and scribbled) by my children when they were little. The little love notes they left for me are my treasures.

  18. Jackie Mohring says:

A favorite Valentine’s Day was a few years ago. My hubby and I were celebrating at home, just a quiet dinner we made. I had just set the table with candles and scattered heart confetti and just got dinner out of the oven and all the lights went out. We had a power outage in our neighborhood. We just lit the candles and had the most romantic dinner ever, laughing to ourselves how other people probably wanted the power to come back on. Us….not so much!

  19. carroll says:

I loved making valentines for my classmates in a decorated shoebox! The past few years I’ve held a Valentine’s tea where my girlfriends & I hang out, make valentines, & eat sweet treats!

  20. Nina says:

Favorites valentines day was when i was younger, about 10 yrs old. I had delivered a homemade card to a good friend, a boy i secretly fancied for ages.
I had’nt gotten a single card in return and was feeling pretty sad, then that afternoon he came round and called on my House with flowers and a card. I was so superized and happy! We started ‘dating’ hihi :))

  21. Andrea Aeschliman says:

Loved creating my Valentines boxes for class parties at school!

  22. ruth ann says:

I loved making valentine’s boxes with our daughters. One year, they made paper self-portraits and attached them to the top of their boxes!!! it was a great time!

  23. YVONNE LORD says:

Several years ago I decided that it wasn’t fair for the kids to have all the fun so I had a valentines party for adults. We made gifts, cards candy etc. for everyone and valentine boxes. there were decoration, Heart shaped chocolate brownie with raspberry topping and whipped topping for dessert and of course decorations and a lot of fun. I have repeated this a few times and it is always a big success. This year we will be having it at lunch time with 8 guests, each bringing a surprise for everyone attending.. project will be playing with water color crayons on some different surfaces We are looking forward to making another fun valentines day memory to go along with all of our child hood memories

  24. Peg Hampton says:

Love the look of these projects and I’m always looking for new ways to use all my washi tape. I like that these are unusual valentines. :)

  25. Peg Hampton says:

Oops so didn’t understand the rules :). My favorite valentines day memory was walking out to take my son to school and seeing a hundred or so foam pink, red and white hearts covering my garage door along with a slightly misspelled Happy Velentin’s day! And hearing the giggling of my 3 nieces and my sister as they hid in the bushes. So unexpected and so precious.

  26. Retta says:

Twenty one years ago, I had a brand new little grand niece (my first)born on February 6. On Valentine’s Day, one of the local tv stations sent a reporter out on the streets to interview people. I was approached by said reporter, and asked if I’d like to say Happy Valentine’s Day to anyone. Dontcha know, I said that I’d like to wish my new little niece a very happy first Valentine’s Day from her favorite auntie! I have it here..somewhere…on a VHS tape. I really should try and find the recording, and wrap it up and give it to that first born niece for Valentine’s Day!

  27. Frances says:

I wrote a love poem to my husband many many years ago and use it in art because the words just remind me of how much he has done for me, and the love I have experienced because of his life in mine!

  28. Laura Strack says:

As a little girl, I loved handing out Valentine Cards and also opening them, from my class mates and friends. The yucky boys in class, always gave Batman or sports related cards, but the girls always handed out cards with pretty hearts and all kinds of cuteness. I wish I would have saved all those pretty little Valentine cards. Wouldn’t they provide some wonderful ephemera for a current project?!

  29. Therese Nair says:

My favorite Valentine’s memory is when my two girls were little-2 years apart-and they each brought home little plaster heart shaped plaques with their little handprints pressed in the centers. Time goes by so quickly; they’re nearly grown women now, but the memory of those tiny hands always brings a tear to my eyes and a smile to my heart.

  30. Patti Parks says:

My favorite was taking that shoe box & covering it with foil, crepe paper & paper doilies! Best part was writing on all those little vintage Valentine cards to take to class & seeing them go into the slot of all those pretty boxes! We got Red Hots & red lollipops for treats!

  31. Nan says:

When I was a starving art student, away from home, my roommate’s mother always made me feel like part of their family by giving me a beautiful Valentines basket of chocolates like the ones she gave her daughter. I still miss those!

  32. Darlene says:

Every year my Dad would bring home chocolate Valentine candy for my Mom and each of us kids – even the boys. I treasure that memory.

  33. Barbara Nekic says:

My children always gave me a Valentine. Some were handmade and I loved these best. One year my son Ken wrote me a poem in red ink on a small yellow piece of paper. I loved that poem because it really came from his heart. I have it still. BB

  34. ruby t says:

Growing up we would cut up construction paper hearts, color on paper, add cut outs of anything we wanted…..and just had fun. The joy of hand-making anything–even cards was so rewarding. More often than not mine were the only handmade cards in the class valentine boxes.

I love receiving hand-made cards today as they are so creative and thoughtful.

  35. Linda F says:

I remember one Valentine’s Day when my two children were very young and my husband and I were separated. I made each child a lovely felt heart mini pillow, with some embroidered words and lace. And I made one for myself with a “Band-Aid” sewn on. :(
The crafting was therapeutic and fun!

  36. Debbie Kaste says:

My favorite Valentines day was a couple years ago. Mom’s birthday is Feb. 15th and so we decided to celebrate both her birthday and Valentines day with a take out meal that we brought over to her house. (We live in COLD Wisconsin so she prefers to stay inside during the winter!) My brother, SIL and my hubby joined us. We decorated her table in settings of pink paper goods and my brother surprised each us ‘girls’ with a lovely pink rose! It looked so gorgeous and she was thrilled with this unexpected surprise. I’ll Never forget the smile on her face – Priceless!

  37. Becky Green says:

THANK YOU SOMERSET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;) I CAN’T WAIT to flip through my SOMERSET IN LOVE MAGAZINE!!!!!!!!!!:) I am CURRENTLY working on Valentines for those DEAR ONES in my life! :) THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

  38. Something a littler more personal that takes more thought than any of those gifts would be happily received by any man.
    – A fuzzy note book and special pen- she already has
one of these and it is one of her favorites.

If your mother loves flowers, tea, or both, she will enjoy this unique Mother’s Day gift.
